The African union peace and security council on Friday endorsed the establishment of a new African union led peacekeeping mission in Somalia after the exit of ATMIS forces by the end of the year.
In a communique, the council said the new mission will support the somali federal government in further degrading alshabaab insurgents and restoring peace in the war torn country while engaging in counter terrorism operations.
The council also supported a request from somalia’s government for slowing the drawdown of ATMIS peacekeepers to prevent a security vacuum that could enable alshabaab insurgents to seize power in the country.
